Bottleneck calculator tools are a simple way to check the relationship between the processor and the graphics card inside your computer. Having a CPU more powerful than your GPU may create a large bottleneck percentagebut will actually provide an advantageous situation in which the processor is able to not only handle the load from the graphics card, but will do it and still have the processing power to spare for any background applications you have running.

Having a GPU more powerful than your CPU may not be as much of a problem as you might think, but the CPU will have to work harder and may not deliver the best performance because it will not have the ability to appropriately handle the demands of the GPU.

In the following article, we will discuss the bottleneck tool itself, the meaning of the percentage and its relationship to the power and demands of the CPU and GPU, and whether or not the score can be trusted to help you make a decision about which hardware you should choose. Online tools offer the ability to check how a CPU and GPU will work togetherand the bottleneck test will output an expected bottleneck percentage. These are the results for two processors tested in turn against the same five graphics cards from NVIDIA to give a baseline for comparison.

The calculator assigns a score to the CPU and another to the GPU, based on various information from their specifications. For CPUs this includes the number of cores, the clock speed, the memory, and the threads. For GPUs this includes the number of shader units, the clock speed, the memory, and the processing power. In the table above, the iK processor is the limiting factor in the bottleneck with the RTX graphics card because it is underpowered for the system.

Understanding GPU and CPU Bottleneck: Solutions to Bottlenecking

With the lower end i K processorthe lower of the two graphics cards are slightly underpowered compared to the CPU, just barely crossing the threshold of what is considered a computer bottleneck.

With the middle graphics cards, the i K shines with a bottleneck score of just a few percentage points, meaning that the CPU and the graphics card will work well together. It is only at the top end of the graphics card spectrum that the i K fails to keep up with its graphics card match, and this processor was still able to match up with the RTXpart of the new flagship series of NVIDIA graphics cardseven if it is a lower model.

Having a processor that is under powered for your graphics card will not take advantage of all the graphics settings your computer has to offer.

cpu bottleneck calculator

It is a waste to spend the extra money on a top of the line GPU when your processor will not be able to take advantage of the enhanced features available from the graphics processor. You would be better served by splitting the difference in cost and getting a slightly better processor or a slightly more modest graphics card. At the very least you can save yourself the money you would otherwise spend on a high end graphics card.

It was far more likely in running these combinations through a bottleneck detector and calculating their percentages that the GPU was the limiting factor, and the processor was over powered for the matchup. In fact, not even the RTX was out of league for the overclockable processor, with a percentage of just 0. It helps that the i K is one of the best processors on the market. Having a graphics card that is weaker compared to the processor is not as big of an issue as it is when the disparity is the other way around.

If you have a more powerful processor, then that means it can deliver the performance necessary to other components of the computer as well, and it is not spending the majority of its energy on making sure that the graphics card is performing well. There is no situation where a graphics card will drag down the performance of a CPU. The biggest problem comes when people take the score from the bottleneck calculator too seriously and think that one number is the end-all, be-all of the relationship between their processor and their graphics card, abandoning a perfectly good combination because an arbitrary number told them to do so.Menu Menu.

Does anyone know of a programs that will tell me what my weakest point in my computer is, so I know what needs priority upgrading? Dec 8, 11, 73 Just use the games you play to determine that.Buying a new graphics card is one of the great joys of owning a gaming or other high-performance PC.

Luckily there are a few online tools designed to help you detect bottlenecks and base your decision on that. Before digging into the actual steps involved in determining whether a bottleneck exists between your existing CPU and prospective GPU, we need to briefly unpack what a bottleneck is in practical terms.

When you are playing a video game, every component of your computer is working on some aspect of the overall system. Your CPU is generally responsible for doing physics calculations, it does the thinking for the game AI, runs the game logic, manages animation and so on.

Your GPU renders all the visuals that you see, which includes all the geometric wireframes, the textures wrapped around them, lighting and shadows. The reverse is also true. In a situation where one component is waiting for another to finish its job before moving on with its own work, you have a bottleneck.

cpu bottleneck calculator

Basically, the entire system is only as fast as the slowest component in the chain. In video games this generally manifests as a frame rate limited by the slower component. In fact, there is almost always a bottleneck in any system.

Although, this situation is less of an issue, given that we usually use our computers for tasks other than just playing video games. Not to mention having some room to run additional background tasks without affecting game performance. Load up a CPU-intensive simulation or strategy game on the other hand, and suddenly your usually under-utilized CPU is tanking the frame rate instead. The settings you use to play also influence this calculation.

For example, playing at higher resolutions puts more strain on the GPU, slowing it down because it takes longer to crunch higher pixel counts. The higher the resolution, the less of a bottleneck the CPU becomes. Because it is still doing the same work, but the GPU is doing more.

Which means we are probably better off buying a slightly slower card, overclocking our existing CPU or upgrading the CPU at a later date. The Overall Combination score shows us how good this is as an absolute performance combo at ultra settings.

Using this information, you should be in a position to make an informed choice about whether that prospective GPU is the right purchase for you. Founder of Help Desk Geek and managing editor.

Bottleneck Calculator is one of the most know tools for determining if one of your internal PC components is not being fully utilized or in other words, it is calculating the bottleneck. Max water flow through the bottle is determined by the width of the bottleneck.

So if you stream to much water in the bottle, the excess will go to waste. It is not the ideal analogy, but it is easy to understand. We can easily spot this with software that measures component utilization. You can actually detect the bottleneck if you use MSI afterburner in-game. It is a common problem when upgrading an old system with a new GPU.

That would mean your graphics card is not being fully used. It would also be a waste of money since you could buy a much cheaper graphics card and would have the same performance in this particular hypothetical system. Why is the bottleneck calculator terrible for figuring out the system bottleneck?

So assuming this calculator can predict all these factors would be just too much to handle. The system could be bottlenecked by the Power supply unit PSU when overclocking.

You should have your operating system always Installed on SDD because you will dramatically decrease loading times. So everything in the PC must be in order and balanced to run your machine efficiently and also to save a buck. While this calculator could be used if the person is not that knowledgeable in building its own PC but in any case, you should further ask someone who knows a bit more about building and optimizing computers.

Joke aside, always ask somebody that is experienced in computer hardware optimization, and PC builds for the second opinion. Testing the bottleneck calculator with Ryzen x and GTX will produce a In this test, GTX is too weak for Ryzen x. I know what the creator of this bottleneck calculator trying to say is. Instead of saying that your graphics card is too weak for your processor, it should tell you that your system or CPU can handle this or better graphics card with ease.

Processor bottleneck is most common in correlation with the graphics card. This means some CPUs cannot handle some better performance GPUs on the market, so graphic cards cannot run to its full potential.

It can handle almost any demanding graphics cards out there, well unless you are pairing it with RTX Ti graphics card, then I would suggest getting a bit faster CPU. Also, Ryzen series is around the corner, so hold your horses and just wait for it if you are in buying spree. With the new Ryzen series, AMD had done really well for himself and the consumers. It is excellent for gaming, productivity, and basically everything. By MindovermasterSeptember 16, in General Discussion. Intel Core i 2. Doesn't work for me selecting a threadripper. Doing OK according to this, still I find it strange that it recommended 1 or 2 sticks of RAM rather than the 4 sticks that I currently have installed.

A good enough idea though. You can tell how stupid the person is that wrote this, because all they have is M2. Im a 3D artist so not happening lol. Besides this "calculator" being utter rubbish Yeah it's telling me to cut my ram by half. If anything I'll put more in. Good advice, already done. We recommend you to replace Intel Core iU 2. This calculator has some issues me thinks. I kinda agree with this one.

I would love a Ryzen! I hear ya. My daughter has a Ryzen 7 system though and it seems fine. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Sign up for a new account in our community. It's easy! Already have an account?

Will Your CPU Bottleneck Your Graphics Card?

BentoBox Reputable. Feb 10, 27 0 4, 0. In addition I had little to no background programs on both tests and I'm really starting to question things.

Incase you wanted some of my specs here it is. Everything is at stock clock. Should I just get an upgrade, if so, for what part? Jun 15, 0 2, You get smooth gameplay during other times.

In my opinion, if you do want to upgrade, a complete system upgrade is necessary. That being said 40fps is still playable and the upgrade would depend on your budget. Usually upgrading the GPU is recommended.Log in or Sign up.

What is the best way to check for a CPU bottleneck? Which is the best way to test? I have a spare Ryzen 3 it can run 3. Test whatever game you want tested, have Msi Afterburner running or gpu-z and check the gpu usage while playing. In a cpu-bottlenecked situation the gpu will have relatively low load and the cpu will be stuffed. CalculuSJun 17, Dragondale13 and yasamoka like this. And like calculus said, if you get lots of low gpu usage drops its just that.

MSI Afterburner. Or you made the mistake of having vsync enabled, in which case you can't tell. Always test with vsync off. Keep in mind that there's almost always a bottlneck.

If one of the components is a huge bottleneck rather than just a slight one and you get a low frame rate, then that's an indication that if you upgrade that component you will get a big FPS boost.

Poor multi-threading code for example can result in idle times where the game does nothing. RealNCJun 18, I would like to thank you all for the valuable information.

I lowered the graphics settings enough for it to render "free" and the CPU was able to maintain a decent stream of information towards it.

I honestly would expect a bottleneck at p with an GTX using the FX but it wasn't quite big I think the system looses maybe a few fps because of the weak CPU but is able to maintain decent framerate. The was running at 4. I would say the Ryzen will beat it hands down in single core perf and get kicked in multi core performance. Will have to buy a B motherboard and some DDR4 to test that out.

I'm too laizy to disable my PC again to test this. I've never thought abut what RealNC said Thanks again for such elaborate answers! I missed you guys and this community. CalculuSJun 18, Last edited: Jun 18, Also, none of this matters if you game at super high resolutions where the GPU takes the brunt of the work. You need better multi-thread support. Get a newer cpu. SerotoNiNJun 19, SerotoNiNJun 21, Tell me that and I will give you the answer your looking for hmmmm.
